Technical Tuesday: Common Customer Service Questions about the MR918

This week, we’re going to answer the top three customer service questions we’ve received so far about the MR918.

The first is Assembly and Disassembly:
1. People seem to have a tendency to pull the slide back a bit too far when they are disassembling the MR918. It may be that some folks aren’t used to the aggressive serrations on the MR918 and that allows for the slide to go back a bit further than you need during disassembly. When disassembling, your start point should be gun empty, no magazine, trigger to the rear. You only need to pull the slide back 1/16 of an inch, a really tiny amount, then pull down on the slide lock to release the slide from the frame.

2. Because of the way we’ve engineered our barrel to locking block and slide to slide rail fit, our top end is just a bit tighter of a fit than other polymer pistols. Therefore, some folks have found, especially on a new gun, that the lugs will hang up a bit on the slide lock as you reassemble. If you get this issue, just give the slide lock the tiniest nudge downward and the slide will ease back onto the frame.

The second question we’ve seen a bit is “how do I get the backstraps off?” They do fit nice and tight on the dovetail, so let’s take a look at how to do that. First, be sure you’re using the tool that comes with your pistol. You will push on the pin from either side and slide it out. Once you remove the pin, you really do need to use the palm of your hand or thumbs to push it off the dovetail. It does take a bit of a push to get started, but once it gets started it comes off quite easily.

Lastly, the magazine well. We’ve had one customer break a magazine well plug when they installed it; we think maybe the plug was in upside down. When you put the plug in, you want to be sure it sits nice and flat into its recess. If it isn’t seated flat, you may break it off. So, once the plug is set, the magazine well hooks on from the front first, then it will snap into place int he back. At that point, you can reinstall your pins. The longer pin, that was already in the gun, goes into the backstrap side and the shorter pin from your kit goes into the bottom. Just a side note, as we’ve been asked this a bit, our magwell system is a proprietary system that is specific to our MR918 and will not fit any other after market magwells in the market.

Those are the top questions we’ve heard from customers so far, but if you have a different question we haven’t answered here, drop it in the comments or drop us a line at 469.458.6808.

  1. Blake Smith says:

Hello! I recently purchased a MR918. Love it but wanted to know if the mag release is compatible with glock, and what gen?

    1. JESSICA@SHADOWSYSTEMSCORP.COM says:

      Hi Blake!
The MR918 is going to be compatible with Glock mag releases. Look for Gen 4 parts.

  2. Jay says:

Hello here, I was wondering if a non adjustable recoil spring was available for the mr920? I’m sure the adjustable spring is fine, but id rather not have a chance of self adusting. thank you for taking the time to reply!

    1. JESSICA@SHADOWSYSTEMSCORP.COM says:

      Hi Jay,

The adjustable aspect of the assembly is not the spring itself, it is that there is a screw that allows you to remove and change the spring installed so that you can adjust the weight of the spring used. We use a bit of blue Loctite on the screw to keep it in place, so it is unlikely to unscrew on its own. However, in the case that the screw did come off on its own, the spring would still stay in place and function normally, it would just not be retained as easily during disassembly. Hopefully this helps to relieve any concerns!

  3. Bob Richardson says:

I find my 920 shoots consistently about 4 inches left and 3 inches low at 30 yards. Is there a sight adjustment for that. I can’t find anything anywhere on that. If not, can you tell me which of the optic systems on your website you like the best. Thanks

    1. Jessica Roe says:

      Hi Bob!
The windage on the pistol can be adjusted using a sight pusher. I advise using an MGW or something as robust. The cheap Amazon universal ones or Glock version will just break.

As far as the elevation goes, that sounds about right. Our guns match POA and POI roundabout 15 yds. So doubling the distance should produce a little bit of a drop.

  4. Matt says:

I just purchased an MR 918 slide to complete my polymer 80/Glock 19 build and I just cannot get it to fit. Is this a common issue?

    1. Jessica Roe says:

Hi Matt, The MR918 slides were only made in a Gen 4 configuration. The Polymer 80 is only available in Gen 3. Unfortunately, that slide will not fit your P80.

  5. Rich says:

Hi I have a MR918 stripped frame. The Glock gen4 trigger housing doesn’t seem to fit. Is there a proprietary trigger housing used? If so, where can I purchase one?

    1. Jessica Roe says:

Rich, Gen 4 housing will work. If you’re having issues, please email my Technical Manager at support@shadowsystemscorp.com

  6. Adam Middleton says:

I just purchased an MR920 from my local dealer. out of habit from owning my other Glocks, I went to replace the new back straps. Again out of habit, I removed the top pin. After rereading the removal instructions and a look on the internet, I realized that pin did not need to come out. When I went to return the pin back, it broke. I have a Gen 4 Glock 19 with the back step pins. Can I use the top pin from the Glock 19 as a replacement top pin in my new MR920, or do I need to get a new from you guys?
    Thank you.

    1. Jessica Roe says:

Adam, I believe my team has taken care of this for you, but if not, please email me at jessica@shadowsystemscorp.com and I will get a new pin out to you ASAP.

  7. Devan Castillo says:

Hello I have the same problem as Adam out of habit I went to remove the top pin thinking it was a backstrap pin and when I went to push it back in it snapped in half. I just bought my mr920 from a dealer today.

  8. Alicia Burrell says:

I have a MR920 War Poet and just can’t get the backstrap off. I’ve removed the pin but can’t muscle it off, using both thumbs or my palm. Any other recommendations for removing it? If not, it’s going to be You get what you get, so don’t throw a fit for me. Thanks!

    1. Jessica Roe says:

Hey Alicia! We do have a lot of people remove the wrong pin, so just want to make sure you are removing the very small diameter pin down at the bottom of the grip? If so, then it is just the fact that the backstraps fit very tight. Once the pin is out, you can place the palm of your hand on the bottom of the back strap with the mag well facing up and “squeeze” to pop it off or press with your thumbs.

Here is a video that may help: https://youtu.be/CzXbg7kdXhQ

      1. Alicia Burrell says:

Thanks for the reply Jessica. Yes, I definitely took out the correct pin. You guys give great instructions! After watching the video, I’ll try again. Thanks.

  9. Robert Sheedy says:

Hi I have a new MR918 and have put about 50 rounds thru. Recently, the slide will not lock back after the last round. Suggestions?

    1. Jessica Roe says:

Robert, can you please email some details about what you’re experiencing to my technical team at supoort@shadowsystemscorp.com?

  10. Rob Carr says:

Hello, what gen glock would I base the mr920 on to get an extended slide release?

  11. tomas urioste says:

    Hi,
I have a new War Poet and when I try to reassemble it it gets stuck and i cant take the slide out or further back as Trevor says but when i try what he suggested it doesnt help,
    what else can i do?

    1. Jessica Roe says:

Thomas, can you please send me your phone number to support@shadowsystemscorp.com? I want to call you directly to walk you through

  12. Refugio Medina says:

I purchased a DR920. The problem I am having is that when I rack the slide back, with an empty chamber, no mag, the slide locks back without me having engaged the slide release lever (the lever stays loose). I have tapped on the slide to see if the slide disengages but it maintains the locked position. I can disengage the slide manually.

    1. Jessica Roe says:

Hi Refugio, Can you please email my technical team at support@shadowsystemscorp.com I would like them to help get to the bottom of this.

  13. Chad Grosskreutz says:

I have a MR 920 combat and I am having an issue with the slide release. Both when fired and when manually racked I cannot use the slide release because it is too stiff. Even with both thumbs I cannot depress it hard enough for it to release the slide. It appears that the slide has dug into the release and caused a burr. The slide shows no signs of burrs or wear only the release does. Is this expected during normal break in?

    1. Jessica Roe says:

Hi Chad, I’m sorry you’re having an issue with your slide release! Could you please reach out to my technical team for assistance? You can reach them at support@shadowsystemscorp.com

    2. Scott Murphy says:

Long story short I lost my slide stop lever. Seems you are out of them currently. Is it the same as the gen 4 19? I’d really like to keep this 100% stock. Thanks.

      1. Jessica Roe says:

Hi Scott, please email my support team at support@shadowsystemscorp.com and they should be able to get you the part you need.

  14. Hosie Ford says:

I bought a DR920 a few weeks ago. I noticed that the slide has a lot of side to side play and some up and down compared to my other Glocks. I only have about 20 rounds through it so far so I’m not sure how much the slide play has on accuracy but it is concerning to me. Is this looseness normal?

    1. Jessica Roe says:

Hi Hosie, some play between the slide and frame is absolutely normal and will not effect accuracy. If you are concerned about it, you can email us a video of what you’re seeing so we can confirm support@shadowsystemscorp.com

      1. Cortney Whitecotton says:

My DR920 is doing same thing. 🙁 I thought these were built with tighter tolerances but I’m lil concerned. U can shake it and it rattles from looseness

      2. Jessica Roe says:

Courtney, some play there is normal, but if you think you may be having excessive movement, please send a video of what you’re seeing to my team at support@shadowsystemscorp.com so they can check it out for you.

    2. Zack says:

I am experiencing this issue as well. Sent you guys an email.

    3. Russell Vaughan says:

I have this issue also on my MR920 elite. Significantly more play in both directions. Approximately 1 mm total in both directions (+/- 0.5 mm). Glock 19 has almost zero play.

      1. Jessica Roe says:

Hi Russell, Some play there is normal, but if you are concerned about it, you can send an email with a video of what you are seeing to our technical team so they can confirm for you whether normal. support@shadowsystemscorp.com

    4. Pascal says:

Interested in knowing the conclusion to this. Mine has a lot of side to side play as well and seeing as the barrel shifts along with the slide, has me worried about the possible effects on accuracy.

      1. Jessica Roe says:

Pascal, having slide play towards the front of your slide is normal and actually done purposefully. That said, if you are concerned about what you are seeing on your weapon, please email a video of your concern to support@shadowsystemscorp.com so my Technical Team can advise on whether it is normal or in need of addressing.

  15. Tyson Waag says:

I have a MR920 Elite and went to install Käwerks extend slide release (Gen3/4) and the release engages and locks the slide to the rear without a magazine inserted. Has anyone else had this issue or have a solution to it? Thanks

    1. Jessica Roe says:

Tyson, can you please email my Technical Team about this? support@shadowsystemscorp.com

  16. Travis Bennett says:

Just purchased what was advertised as a mr920 elite
But what I got is a mr920 combat, no optic cut or threaded barrel, and there is also a big gap at muzzle end between slide and frame is this normal? And can my upper be exchanged for the configuration that I ordered? Thanks

    1. Jessica Roe says:

Hi Travis, where do you purchase your pistol? Was it direct from our site? If so, please email your order number and details to support@shadowsystemscorp.com so we can fix that mixup for you. If you purchased this from a dealer, you will need to take it up with them to return or exchange the pistol for what you paid for.

      1. Travis Bennett says:

Purchased through lgs, contacted them and was told to contact Shadow systems directly to resolve this?

      2. Jessica Roe says:

Travis, does the pistol you received match the label on the box? Unless the pistol doesn’t match what the box says, unfortunately this is not an issue on our end and will need to be taken up with the local store who sold it to you. If you’d like to give us the serial number, we can look up what model it is supposed to be in our system. You can email my team at support@shadowsystemscorp.com

      3. Travis Bennett says:

I contacted my LGS and they informed me I had to take this matter up with customer service

      4. Jessica Roe says:

Please contact our customer service at support@shadowsystemscorp.com. We can look into the issue. However, if the pistol matches the label on the box (ie the box says combat and your pistol is a combat) then this is something you’ll need to take up with your LGS.

  17. Travis Bennett says:

I’m still waiting on a response from shadow systems
